There's no single central law mandating it for every private employee, but the Industrial Employment (Standing Orders) Act, 1946 requires a service certificate for covered 'workmen', and several state Shops and Establishments Acts (Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka and others) make withholding a service certificate an offence.

What's the difference between an Experience Letter and a Relieving Letter?

A Relieving Letter is a factual record confirming your last working day and that dues are settled — it should not include performance opinions. An Experience Letter covers your tenure, role and conduct, and can include a performance assessment.

What if my employer refuses to issue a letter?
